If your pockets are as deep as the lake, why not charter a yacht and explore the lake in style? If fishing is your bag, what say you to a fishing trip? A boat can be hired quite reasonably. Desert Salmon Charters is one of the best in the business, offering as it does all manner of guided boat trips: fishing, diving, camping, and adventure boat tours. Owned and operated by the incomparable Nelson, a long-time resident of the Okanagan, a scuba dive master, BC certified fishing guide, and amateur photographer. Nelson has a BSc in freshwater science and a master’s degree in water governance and is a professional Agrologist. So, rest assured, you’ll be in the safest of hands. So if there’s a sockeye Salmon with your name on it or you fancy a spot of snorkelling or diving he is your man.
If you’re devotee of the grape, then look no further than Cedar Creek Estate Winery. It’s one of forty wineries in Okanagan (yes, you read that aright) and their motto (‘Our wine is our word’) is particularly apt. Nestled amongst lush vineyards and panoramic lake views, Cedar Creek Estate Winery is one of Kelowna’s oldest wineries. If you have time to visit only one, then make it this. Other stand-out examples include Ancient hill (oodles of old world charm) and for the modernists among you, Arrowleaf Cellars. They also get the prize for the most evocative name.
If you’d rather commune with Nature, then Knox Mountain is a must. Commanding utterly spectacular views of Okanagan Lake, it is Kelowna’s Largest Natural area park. But it is no Everest. It’s a mere 300 metres above the high water level of Okanagan Lake. So do bring the family.
In fact, hikers are in their element here in Okanagan. There are trails galore and the terrain varies from easy to difficult. Particularly rewarding is to spend a few days at a nature retreat. Mountain Springs is an excellent case in point. And, remember, this is bear country.
‘Experiential’ tourism is all the rage at the moment and ‘experiences’ don’t come more exciting than on embarking on an adventure. And you can do just that. The Myra Canyon Adventure Park and Ranch, for example, offers all manner of activities such as zip lining, climbing and much more.
One might be forgiven for thinking Okanagan is a culture-free zone. Not a bit of it! There are three fine museums and a number of excellent art galleries, to boot. Added to which there are dozens of festivals throughout the year. Music, too, is well represented. For starters, there’s the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, while many concerts are held in the open air.
Finally, if you’re something of a monster hunter, then you’ll be familiar with the fabled Ogopogo, a fearsome lake monster reported to live in the lake. We did warn you!

A wonderful Kelowna experience!
“I stayed at the Cadder House for a month during my clinical rotation at KGH. It really felt like a home away from home. Yolanda and Rick went out of their way to make sure my roommate and I had everything we needed to be comfortable. A beautiful place and amazing hosts. I will definitely… Read more “A wonderful Kelowna experience!”
